MAXIMUM ALLOWED SPEED IN THE BOKA BAY

While navigating through Montenegro’s internal waters, a yacht is obliged to proceed at a safe speed so as not to endanger and harm other vessels at sea.

Boka Bay (Bay of Kotor) is the popular nautical destination in Montenegro. The sea traffic, especially during the summer season is busy. Therefore, it is important to obey speed limitations.

The speed of navigation in the entire Bay of Boka is limited.

The speed limit for vessels over 24 m

The safe speed limit within Boka Bay shall not exceed 10 knots, and while in the Strait of Kumbor, the Strait of Verige maximum speed is 6 knots.

These speed limits are mandatory for all vessels longer at 24 m: super yachts, mega yachts, yachts, sail yachts, catamarans, trimarans, cruisers, etc.

For vessels with a length less than 24 meters, the maximum speed in the Bay of Boka is 14 knots, and while in Kumbor Strait (channel) and the Strait of Verige speed limit is 10 knots.

NEW FUEL STATION WITH DUTY-FREE DIESEL IN MONTENEGRO – D-MARIN PORTONOVI

In Montenegro tax-free diesel is available for private and commercial yachts.

In addition to the existing three fuel stations for tax-free diesel in Montenegro, another one has started operating. The new fuel station is located in the D-Marin Portonovi marina.

Upon completion of tax-free bunkering the yacht must leave the territorial waters of Montenegro without delay, except in some unexpected emergency situation with the allowance from custom and police authorities.

A new marina and maritime border crossing in Montenegro

D-Marin Portonovi marina 

A new marina in Montenegro, D-Marin Portonovi, is the part of the luxury Portonovi Resort, which opened its doors August 1 this year. It is located at the entrance to the picturesque Boka Bay and it is the perfect starting point for exploring the riches of Montenegro.

New maritime border crossing '' Port of Kumbor - Portonovi ''

Opening of the marina, a new maritime border crossing '' Port Kumbor - Portonovi '' officially opened too. 

As they say from the marina, the border crossing is permanent, it will work all year long, while it is working hours conditioned by Harbor Master's office hours, 07:00 h - 19:00 h, with occasional pauses. As far as police and customs are concerned, they will work in shifts and cover 24h - working hours. 

The border crossing is intended first for the needs of D-Marin Portonovi marina visitors.

Distance of Portonovi from Montenegrin marinas:

Marina Portonovi is located 3.5NM of the only town in the Bay of Kotor, which you can see from the open sea, called Herceg Novi. 

Marina Porto Montenegro-Tivat – This marina is located at only 4 NM from Portonovi. Since 2010, Porto Montenegro is the official port of entry of Montenegro, so you can finish all the formalities with the port authorities, customs and police here. Within the marina there is a gas station where you can purchase duty-free fuel.

Marina Kotor – It is located in the Bay of Kotor, only a few dozen meters from the Old Town. This port can also carry out all the necessary formalities regarding entry and exit from Montenegro. Distance of this marina from Portonovi is 10.6 NM.

Marina Lustica Bay - 12.5 NM separates Portonovi from the newly constructed marina Lustica Bay, which is a part of the tourist village. The marina has 176 berths which can accommodate vessels of up to 35m.

Marina Budva - Budva is the Montenegrin tourism metropolis. If you plan to sail into this marina, the old town walls and the bell tower of the church will be your main orientation points. Marina Budva has a Port Branch Office, border crossing and police. It is located 22NM away from Portonovi.

Marina Bar – It is located at 35NM away from Portonovi. In this port, you can complete all the formalities with the port authorities which are necessary for entry into Montenegro and exit from its territorial waters. Marina is equipped with a gas station, where you can supply your vessel (up to 40m) with duty-free fuel. Providing for the larger boats, yachts and mega yachts is carried out in the Port of Bar.

Port Zelenika - Zelenika port serves as the border crossing and is only 1.8 NM away from Portonovi-Montenegro. You can go through all the necessary procedures for entering and leaving the territorial waters of Montenegro here.

There are two airports in the close proximity of Portonovi: Tivat and Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik Airport can be reached in less than an hour's drive (33 km), while Tivat is only 18km away.

Udaljenost Portonovi od crnogorskih marina:

Marina Herceg Novi - U neposrednoj blizini nalazi se jedini grad u bokokotorskom zalivu koji možete vidjeti sa otvorenog mora, Herceg Novi. Nalazi se na 3.5 NM od marine Portonovi.

Speed limit navigation Boka Bay - Kotor, Tivat, Risan, Herceg Novi, Zelenika

Increasing interest in Montenegro as a yachting destination, as well as the record traffic in the Boka of Bay (port of Kotor, Porto Montenegro Tivat, Zelenika port) and the rest of the Montenegrin coast by a large number of yachts, cruise ships and recreational boats caused the increase in maritime traffic congestion.

In order to increase safety of navigation, representatives of Port Authorities and Harbor Patrol apply enhanced checks for security of yachts and boats in the summer period.

Besides controlling the possession permits for the use of maritime routes - Vignette for foreign yachts and boats, they also have an interest in the presence of a trained skipper - captain and crew along the entire Montenegrin coast. There is also an increased control of speed of navigation in Kotor, Risan, Tivat and Herceg Novi.

An important fact is that the maximum permitted speed of navigation in the entire Boka Bay (bay of Kotor, bay of Risan, bay of Tivat and bay of Herceg Novi) is 10 knots (10 kn).

In Kumbor strait (channel) and the strait of Verige maximum speed of navigation is 6 knots (6 kn).

The above restrictions apply to all participants in maritime transport without exception, namely: passenger ships, yachts, mega yachts, boats, jet skis, boats, sailboats, catamarans, trimarans, cargo ships and any other vessels types.

To avoid unnecessary checks and penalties regulated by the Law representatives of Port Authorities of Kotor and the Harbour Patrol, all participants in maritime traffic are required to follow the regulations regarding the speed limits in navigation the Bay of Boka.

Ograničenja brzine plovidbe - Kotor, Tivat, Risan, Herceg Novi, Zelenika

Povećanjem interesovanja za Crnu Goru kao jahting destinaciju, rekordna posjećenost Bokokotorskog zaliva (luka Kotor, Porto Montenegro Tivat, luka Zelenika) i ostatka crnogorske obale od strane velikog broja jahti i plovila uslovilo je i povećanje gužvi u pomorskom saobraćaju.
U cilju povećanja bezbijednosti plovidbe, predstavnici lučkih kapetanija i pomorske policije u ljetnjem periodu vrše pojačanu kontrolu jahti i plovila. Pored kontrole posjedovanja dozvola za upotrebu pomorskih puteva - Vinjeta za strana plovila i jahte, prisutnosti obučenih skipera - kapetana i članova posade na cijelom crnogorskom primorju, povećana je i kontrola brzine plovidbe u kotorskom, risanskom, tivatskom i hercegnovskom zalivu.
Nije na odmet napomenuti da je maksimalna dozvoljena brzina plovidbe u cijelom bokokotorskom zalivu 10 čvorova (10 kn). U kumborskom tjesnacu (kanalu) i tjesnacu Verige maksimalna brzina plovidbe je 6 čvorova (6 kn).

Pomenuta ograničenja važe za sve učesnike u pomorskom saobraćaju bez izuzetaka odnosno: putnički brodovi, jahte, mega jahte, gliseri, skuteri, čamci, jedrilice, katamarani, trimarani, teretni brodovi i ostala plovila.
